When the Maintenance team at the Kentucky Speedway called Spray-Tec for a “race against the clock” style project, we responded with NASCAR style speed. The task: restore the roof surface where the television camera crews are stationed for the Quaker State 400. The old EPDM roof had been coated with polyurea only a few years earlier, but it soon became apparent that the coating was rapidly degrading from UV exposure and beginning to break down the material.

Our crew was tasked with inspecting the entire roof area–using infrared scanning–, finding/marking where the insulation board below the EPDM was saturated, removing and repairing those areas, and then priming and coating the entire roof with silicone coating. The kicker? We only had 25 days before the Race! We found that approximately 30% of the insulation board had to be removed.
Fortunately, the polyurea that was firmly adhered could remain. The crew was able to cut and peel back the EPDM membrane, install new insulation board, and “reconnect” the membrane using term bar and reinforcement fabric, before spraying silicone over the entire surface. The new Coating System gave the Speedway a 10-year renewable warranty and saved them thousands in time & material costs by eliminating a full Roof Replacement.
Scope of Work
- Performed infrared scan to identify wet areas that had to be torn out.
- Power wash both roofs; remove/cut back polyurea coating, tear out and replace wet insulation board as indicated by infrared scan.
- Cut back perimeter edge to relieve membrane shrinkage and install new edge metal detail at guttered edge.
- Reseal new edge detail using butyl tape and silicone coating.
- Prime the surface with epoxy primer.
- Flash rooftop units, drains and penetrations with silicone sealant.
- Spray base coat of silicone.
- Spray top coat and broadcast granules.
